Are Clear Braces Better Than Metal Braces?

If you are making a decision on what braces are best for your situation, let's take a look at how clear braces in Weston compare to metal braces.

Before the development of clear braces in Weston, metal braces were the only solution for correcting orthodontic concerns and they were mostly used for teenagers and young children. Nowadays, there is a significant number of adult patients who want to undergo orthodontic treatments.

Advantages of Clear and Metal Braces

Why Patients Choose Metal Braces

Metal braces are the oldest orthodontic correction option in which metal brackets are attached to the teeth using dental glue. Rubber bands then connect these brackets to get the desired alignment.

Since this type of braces may need periodic adjustments, you will be required to schedule multiple appointments with your dentist. These periodic adjustments will increase the pressure on your teeth and guarantee that they are correctly aligned.

These braces effectively correct very crooked and crowded teeth. Additionally, they’re also a great way to use self-expression by using changeable colored bands for your school or favorite team!

Why Patients Choose Clear Braces

Clear braces, otherwise known as ceramic braces, are an exceptional orthodontic solution for patients who want to discreetly restore their teeth. The only difference is that ceramic braces use clear wires and brackets.

The most notable benefit why patients choose clear braces is because they are less noticeable and aesthetically pleasing compared to traditional braces. Having this type of braces can greatly impact a patient's life, especially when they often feel self-conscious about wearing them.

Unlike traditional metal braces, ceramic braces don't irritate the soft tissues and gums of the mouth. So, you won't have to experience pain and discomfort when eating.

Are you unhappy with your crooked and misaligned teeth? Are they affecting your confidence? Don't hesitate! Contact Dr. Lindsay to get braces in Weston, FL. Getting braces can be a great way to straighten your teeth and improve your smile. However, with so many different types of braces available, how do you know which treatment is best suited for you?

To guide you in making the right decision, we’ve come up with two simple steps you can follow.

How to Know if You Need Braces

Step 1

Why do you think you need braces? You must assess your needs before deciding which type of braces are right for you. Ask yourself the following questions:

·       Do I want people to know that I’m straightening my teeth, or do I want to be more discreet about it?

·       Do I have a limited budget, or is my budget flexible?

·       Do I need to straighten my teeth as fast as possible for an important event?

·       Are my teeth severely crooked, or do they only need minor corrections?

Step 2

After having a chat with yourself, you need the opinion of a professional. It’s possible that your big concern has another treatment option! Scheduling an appointment will offer insight into the medical and functional need for orthodontic intervention.

The Pros and Cons of the Different Types of Braces

Metal Braces

If your teeth are severely misaligned or your bite is offset, metal braces may be the ideal solution for you.

Pros: Can effectively correct malocclusions, straighten teeth, and re-align the jaw.

Cons: They’re very noticeable and may feel uncomfortable.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are like traditional braces. In contrast, their brackets are made from a transparent material. They're much less noticeable when compared to traditional braces with metal brackets. Their invisibility makes them popular among adults who need orthodontic treatment.

Pros: Less visible but just as effective as metal braces.

Cons: Ceramic is less durable compared to metal. Not recommended for severe cases.

Invisalign Braces

Invisalign braces are a popular tooth straightening solution. They’re made from clear, plastic aligners that fit snuggly over teeth. They’re extremely discreet. In fact, they are so invisible, very few people will be able to tell you are wearing braces at all.

Pros: More comfortable compared to traditional braces. They’re made from smooth plastic material, so they don’t rub against the insides of your cheeks. Virtually invisible.

Cons: You may pay a bit more for these than the alternatives.

Why Should My Teen Get Invisalign?

More Comfortable

Traditional braces come with metal brackets and wires that be uncomfortable, as well as damaging to the gums and the inside of the cheek. On the other hand, Invisalign is a completely metal-free treatment. No brackets, no wires, no hassle. Invisalign braces are clear aligners that simply snap onto their teeth without a need for any adhesive or clasps.

 Aesthetically Pleasing

Invisalign for teens is more aesthetically pleasing compared to traditional braces. They’re virtually invisible, so no one can tell your teen has braces on. This way, they’ll be more comfortable throughout the entire treatment.

Reliable Results

Invisalign can be just as effective as traditional braces. They can help align teeth and correct bites. Although the length of treatment will depend on how severe the orthodontic case is, you can rest assured that the results are reliable and worth it.

Suitable for Extracurricular Activities

If your teen is into sports or music, then you might be concerned about the comfort and safety of traditional braces, which can cut or aggravate the inside of your teen’s mouth. Invisalign clear aligners are both safe and comfortable to wear, but they are also conveniently removable.

How to Thrive in the First Few Days of Treatment

Embarking on your journey to straighter teeth is an exciting one, but what if it takes a few days for your mouth to adjust to the treatment? We have 4 tips to help you thrive (not survive) your first few days of treatment.

let your smile-1-2.jpg

Embarking on your journey to straighter teeth is an exciting one, but what if it takes a few days for your mouth to adjust to the treatment? Invisalign aligners and braces may scrape the inside of your cheeks at first or inhibit you from eating normally if you try to continue as normal.

We have some excellent tips to help you thrive as you wait for everything to settle back to normal.

  • Cut food into small pieces. If your mouth is sensitive, make cutting your food smaller than normal a priority. This will make chewing much easier and you’ll avoid the awkward, exaggerated mouth movements as you adjust to eating. This will also help minimize the hardware rubbing inside the cheeks.

  • Use orthodontic wax. If you are having trouble with the hardware poking or rubbing the inside of your mouth, make sure to cushion it with orthodontic wax. This will create a softer surface for your mouth and will be less irritating. Sleeping with the wax on also helps heal the mouth quicker.

  • Do a salt water rinse. Until your mouth adjusts to braces, doing salt water rinses will help soothe sore areas. Simply stir in 2tbsp of salt into a cup of warm water and gargle.

  • Drink more water. Staying hydrated creates more saliva, which helps remineralize the tooth enamel and keeps the cheeks lubricated. When the cheeks stay lubricated, the hardware will gently slide over your cheek instead of scrape into it.

We hope these tips help you get accustomed quickly to your treatment! If you are having prolonged issues and need assistance, please don’t hesitate to call our office. We would be happy to help!

How to Take Care of Your Invisalign

How do you keep your aligners clean? How do you avoid discoloration? We’re here to help!

AdobeStock_235295012__1555015745_49982.jpg

Making sure your aligners are in top condition is a big priority when you’re on your Invisalign journey. When plaque and saliva collect on the aligner trays, it creates the perfect situation for harmful and odor-causing bacteria to grow. If you’re not mindful of certain foods or beverages, you can unknowingly cause discoloration! How do you avoid that? We’re here to help.

Here are some best practices for keeping your aligners in clean condition:

  • Brush, brush, brush. Brush your aligners with a little toothpaste and water every time you remove them at home. Brush and floss your teeth often. This will reduce bacteria and discoloration.

  • Avoid staining foods and beverages. Wine, coffee, tea, and soda all contribute to discoloration if you don’t brush your teeth and aligner tray immediately after.

  • Avoid beverages that are too hot. Drinking beverages that are too hot may warp the plastic trays and cause the aligners to fit improperly.

  • Wear the aligners religiously. In order for the most effective treatment, only remove to eat and clean to avoid getting outside residue on the trays.

  • Do a deep clean once or twice a week. To do this, soak your aligners in Invisalign Cleaning Crystals, Retainer Brite, or denture cleaner. Avoid colored cleaners as it may stain your aligners.
